Do You Experience Tooth Sensitivity?
At Palmieri Dentistry, we want to do all we can to help our patients have ideal health. If you find yourself avoiding your favorite cold or hot foods, such as ice cream, because they can cause discomfort in your teeth, you may be experiencing tooth sensitivity. Tooth sensitivity is not uncommon, and most people experience it at some point. If you experience tooth sensitivity regularly, it can be an indication that you have a problem with your oral health.
What Causes Tooth Sensitivity?
The outer layer, the enamel, is the strongest substance in the body, but it is not indestructible. If it becomes worn or damaged, it can lead to problems with tooth sensitivity. We do want to note that it is not uncommon to experience tooth sensitivity following certain dental treatments. Patients are notified of this side effect following the completion of treatment, so they do not feel alarmed when they have discomfort. If you have not had a recent dental treatment and are experiencing tooth sensitivity, it may be caused by:
- Brushing teeth too hard or using a hard-bristled toothbrush
- Receding gums
- Tooth decay
- Gum disease
- Cracked or chipped tooth
- Teeth grinding
- Excessive teeth whitening
Ways to Help Tooth Sensitivity
If you experience tooth sensitivity, there are some changes you can make to help. We recommend evaluating the manner in which you brush your teeth. Be sure to use gentle motions with a soft-bristled toothbrush. There are also a number of toothpastes designed for sensitive teeth. We are more than happy to demonstrate how to properly brush your teeth during your next appointment.
